I n the history of Pet Shop Boys, they have been cases of song remixes with modified, extra or even rerecorded lyrics, just to mention West End girls (disco mix), It’s alright (10” mix) or Discoteca (PSB extended mix). But Being boring doesn’t fall into this category. All three official remixes offer nothing unusual lyrics-wise, extended mix being virtually the same as original (not counting the echoed “always rely on a friend” at the end of the second chorus), 7” mix only having part of the last chorus shortened, and Marshall Jefferson’s mix just shuffling the order of verses/choruses.

L ive performances of Being boring brought certainly more small additions, although they also will most definitely stay unnoticed by non-fans.

Being it a result of mistake, or conscious decision, some performances of the song (i.e. 1997’s Moscow or 1999’s Atlanta concerts) have had the words in “When I went, I left from the station” switched to “When I left, I went from the station”. They’ve also been several accidents of “And we were never being boring” changed to “‘Cause we were never being boring” (2000’s Equality Rocks concert).

As soon as in 1994’s Discovery tour, Neil started to sing the third verse in a different way:

Now I sit with different faces
in rented rooms and foreign places.
All the people I was kissing,
some are here but some are missing
    in the 1990s.

...as if he wanted to emphasize that the loss of the ones loved is harder to come to terms with that he originally thought.

Being boring 1999’s performance at Creamfields Festival in UK changed the last chorus to “we were never, we were never, we were never feeling bored” accompanied by Sylvia Mason-James’ ad-libbed “no, no, no, no, no.”

And starting with the first day of year 2000, we no longer live “in the 1990s.” Therefore, to reflect the change of decades, first Spanish concert on 16th January and all subsequent live performances of Being boring have had third verse lyrics once again slightly updated:

Now I sit with different faces
in rented rooms and foreign places.
All the people I was kissing,
some are here but some were missing
    by the 1990s.

D epending on what sources one confronts—sheet music, Mini PSB album, official site—there are some minor differences in Being boring lyrics, usually in their presentation (punctuation, quotation marks, numbers versus words etc.). However, none of these differences are significant to the meaning of lyrics.
